Crump was born in Herefordshire but by the age of 17 he was working as a clerk for Great Western Railways in Wolverhampton. From 1868 until his retirement in 1905 he served as Chief Clerk and it was during this time that he both founded and played for GWR's Stafford Road Football Club. In 1876-77 the team reached the Birmingham Senior Cup Final, Crump scoring both goals in their 3-2 defeat to Wednesbury Old Athletic. This was the first edition of the tournament, and the first time a tournament other than the FA Cup was played to Football Association laws. For the final in Bournbrook, a special train was arranged from Wolverhampton, calling at Wednesbury, West Bromwich and Hockley, to allow the team members and their friends to travel to the match. The match was also notable for being the last match before dangerous "charges" (tripping, hacking, and charging from behind) became classed as fouls. Crump retired from playing in 1881, but six years earlier he had already been made first President of the Birmingham Football Association, a position he held until after his 80th birthday in 1920. Crump was also elected to the Football Association Council in 1883, and from 1886 until his death in 1923 he served as vice-president, his encyclopaedic knowledge of the rules of the game and his love for the sport earning him great acclaim, symbolised by an invitation to present the FA Cup to the winners Bradford City in 1911. In addition to serving on various other national committees, Crump also acted as vice-president of Wolverhampton Wanderers, playing a pivotal role in the development of the Club, and was an accomplished referee after he finished playing. He took charge of FA Cup ties, including the 1883 Final, the first League matches and the first official match at Molineux. Provenance: sold on behalf of a descendant of Charles Crump.
