Leslie Victor Crump was the great nephew of Charles Crump (see preceding lot). He was born in Wolverhampton in 1902 and like his great uncle began his career playing for a local works team, in his case Sunbeam Motors. Like other works teams they competed in the Birmingham and District League and occasionally featured professional players, or supplied future ones for Wolverhampton Wanderers. In 1925 Crump was awarded the present cap for representing England in one of the so-called 'Hawthorn Series' of matches played at the home of West Bromwich Albion. The series comprised three games played in 1908, 1925 and 1935 between the Birmingham and District Association and the Scottish Junior Football Association. The series were popularly referred to as "Junior Internationals", and billed as "England v Scotland".
It was at the 1925 match that Crump caught the eye of scouts from Kilmarnock, who reported that he "played in all the representative matches of the Birmingham and District Association this season. A speedy type of a player, he outsprinted the Scottish right back in the recent international, and was one of the outstanding successes on the English side". He signed for Kilmarnock on 16 May 1925 and was awarded the Ayrshire Football Association Qualifying Cup medal included in the lot a year later, before ending his career in 1927 at Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic.
Provenance: by descent to the present owner.
