Barker, light soiling, short tear to lower joint, 8vo, William Heinemann, [1950] RARE UNCORRECTED PROOF OF THE FIRST BOOK IN THE 'DANCE TO THE MUSIC OF TIME' SEQUENCE - WITH SIGNIFICANT TEXTUAL CORRECTIONS IN THE AUTHOR'S HAND. There are approximately eighty corrections and amendments to the text, of which about thirty are alterations to the text as it appeared in the published first edition. Printed words are struck through, with Powell's new text added in the margin. For example on p.66 the word "slammed" is replaced with "banged-to", and "that he belonged to" with "his attachment", or, on p.99 the text "Have fun with [the French girls]" is replaced with "Don't spoil [the French girls]". In other cases single words, or additions are made, as in on p.189 where the wording "with an inscription" is added at the end of the printed text "Take great care of it, because it is a first edition." The proof wrappers re-used waste from an earlier Heinemann publication, Dog Days (1938) by K.F Barker. The verso of the title-page states "First Published 1950", but the first edition was not published until 22 January 1951. Provenance: Alan Pryce-Jones (1908–2000). In 1946, shortly after he was made editor of the Times Literary Supplement, Pryce-Jones made Powell "responsible for the paper's fiction reviewing – and also as a regular fiction reviewer himself" (Jeremey Treglown, "Anthony Powell, 'Man of Letters' and Literary Editor", in Secret Harmonies.
