Description
POWELL (ANTHONY)
A Buyer's Market, FIRST EDITION, AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED to "Alan [Pryce-Jones] and Poppy with love from Tony, June 1952" on the front free endpaper, publisher's red cloth, light spotting and dusting to upper text block, dust-jacket (unclipped, toned with spine ends frayed, short marginal tear to lower cover), 8vo, William Heinemann, [1952]
The second title in the 'Dance to the Music of Time' sequence, inscribed by the author to his lifetime literary friend Alan Pryce-Jones and the critic's first wife "Poppy" (Thérèse Fould-Springer, who died in 1953).
Provenance: Alan Pryce-Jones (1908–2000), inscribed to him by the author. In 1946, shortly after he was made editor of the Times Literary Supplement, Pryce-Jones made Powell "responsible for the paper's fiction reviewing – and also as a regular fiction reviewer himself" (Jeremey Treglown, "Anthony Powell, 'Man of Letters' and Literary Editor", in Secret Harmonies. Journal of the Anthony Powell Society, No. 2, October 2007); by descent to the present owner.
