FREEMASONRY
[ANDERSON (JAMES)] The Constitutions of the Free-Masons. Containing the History, Charges, Regulations, &c. of that Most Ancient and Right Worshipful Fraternity. For the Use of the Lodges, engraved frontispiece by John Pine (cut down and mounted), woodcut vignette on title-page, dedication to the Duke of Montague with woodcut headpiece, advertisement leaf, lacking half-title, light damp-staining (a little heavier on title-page), eighteenth-century speckled calf gilt, masonic compass motifs and red morocco title label on spine, modern slipcase [ESTC T86287], 4to , William Hunter for John Senex at the Globe and John Hooke at the Flower-de-Luce, 1723
The second book printed on freemasonry. Anderson's text was published only six years after the establishment of the first Grand Lodge in England, and is preceded only by the extremely rare Old Constitutions, published by J. Roberts in 1722 (of which ESTC records only three copies). This edition became the standard work of reference for freemasonry until the end of the Victorian era, and went through 24 editions between 1723-1897. It is divided into three sections: a history of freemasonry, charges to which all freemasons are to adhere, and regulations governing masonic lodges.
