(sheet) undated v) 3 lithographed facsimiles of the letters by Midshipman Christopher West's account of the Battle of Trafalgar, all held together in a half morocco solander case (small group) FIRST PRINTED NEWS OF THE BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR. The Gibraltar Chronicle Extraordinary presents Vice-Admiral Collingwood's initial report of the Battle of Trafalgar and the Death of Nelson: "...Euryalus, At Sea, October 22, 1805. SIR, Yesterday a Battle was fought by His Majesty's Fleet, with the Combined Fleets of Spain and France, and a Victory gained, which will stand recorded as one of the most brilliant and decisive, that ever distinguished the BRITISH NAVY...Our loss has been great in Men; but, what is irreparable, is the Death of the NOBLE COMMANDER IN CHIEF, who died in the Arms of Victory..." It also reports Nelson's last words "Thank God! I have outlived this day and now I die content!" Very rare. Included in the lot is the Supplement where more details of the battle were gathered directly from the crew and other participants in the action. It gives a detailed narrative of Nelson's actions during the engagement (including the famed message "ENGLAND expects that every man will do his duty"), particulars of the wounding and the shooting by Mr. Pollard of the French soldier who had shot Nelson (this is the first account of the shooting, and is only quoted by a later London Gazette and later reprinted in the Naval Chronicle), instructions to Capt. Hardy, and Nelson's final words now reported as: "he felt death fast approaching, and that he had but a few minutes to live; that he could have wished to have survived a little longer to have seen the Fleet in safety, but as that was impossible he thanked God that he had outlived the action, and had been enabled to do his duty to his country."
