[TUCKER (JOSEPH)] A Narrative of the Operations of a Small British Force, Under the Command of Brigadier-General Sir Samuel Auchmuty, Employed in the Reduction of Monte Video, on the River Plate, A.D. 1807. By a Field Officer on the Staff, FIRST EDITION, engraved plan of Monte Video as frontispiece, two pages of notes and a 2-page typed letter loosely inserted, light toning and occasional spotting, publisher's green sand-grained cloth-backed drab boards, title label on spine (chipped with some loss), worn edges and a little faded [Sabin 5189], 4to, John Stockdale, 1807 A RARE AND IMPORTANT RECORD OF THE SHORT-LIVED BRITISH OCCUPATION OF MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY. Only two copies traced in institutions, BL and Cambridge, of this first-hand account of the British assault on Montevideo in 1807. Sir Samuel Auchmuty (1758-1822), had a long and distiguished military career spanning the American War of Independence, India and Egypt (where he served under Sir David Baird and took part in the desert march). As brigadier-general he took party in the ill-fated Río de la Plata campaign. Despite the broader British failure, Auchmuty distinguished himself at the siege of Montevideo and in the subsequent operations. The account is generally attributed to Major Tucker, Auchmuty's brigade major, who served with the 72nd Foot. Auchmuty later faced a court martial over conduct during the Buenos Aires phase of the campaign but was acquitted. He was subsequently promoted major-general.
