ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT LEAVES
Two leaves from a Breviary recounting the martyrdom of St Lawrence, two leaves conjoined, in Latin, 42 lines in two columns in gothic textualis, brown ink on vellum with rubrics in red, one historiated initial "P" depicting St Lawrence, acanthus border in lower left-hand margin, both heightened in gold, one small hole in right-hand margin, old crease, 495 x 350mm., Northern France or Flanders, second half of the fifteenth century
These leaves contain the Martyrdom of St. Lawrence as recounted in the Sanctorale section of a late fifteenth-century Breviary. The text opens with the historical narrative of his trial and martyrdom on the gridiron, followed by readings for his Octave, an eight-day period of continuous liturgical celebration following a major feast day. During this extended week, the daily readings would shift from the story of the saint's death to patristic sermons and theological commentary reflecting on his spiritual legacy.
The saint is here depicted in deacon's vestments, holding the gridiron, the instrument of his passion.
