Ethiopia at the end of the 19th century. ==References== Especially small and pretty pocket prayer book with clean Ge'ez font in black and red ink written by uniform hand, clean on remarkably bright parchment. Included are the Psalter, prayers, excerpts from the Song of Solomon and the Office of Mary, but also occult texts - a mixture of Sacred Scripture, devotional and edifying verses typical of the Christian faith in North Africa, as well as magic formulas that protect against evil spirits and ask for the protection of the saints. As usual, the lines were predetermined by small needle stitches and then drawn with the handle. The miniatures depict Saint George on horseback, a Mary Eleusa, the Angel of the Annunciation Gabriel and a Christ triumphant. – With usual signs of usage, however, only a few, isolated parchment lassures or flaws, a little flaccid, but altogether a lovely witness of North African-Christian piety.
