With large four-piece woodcut title border and printer brand of Jean Petit and numerous 3-15-line woodcut initials. 31.5 x 21 cm. Blind embossed pigskin d. Z. (somewhat flaky, dusted and picked up, hardly any flaws) over four double frets and angular wooden covers with 2 brass closures (jointed bands renewed) and old cut title "EPLE.AUG". (Paris, Johannes Parvus and Jodocus Badius, 1515). IA BP16 102675. Renouard, Badius, II, 60f. – Edition of the epistle corpus from the pen of Saint Augustine of Hippo, edited by Badius and Parvus (Jean Petit) in their Parisian office. A very nice post-inkunabel print. – Title and first leaves with restored worm canal (minimum representation, but no text loss), further small cracks, also in the attachment pages, somewhat unsightly insertion of red ink from the right upper section, otherwise well preserved in the block. Title with hs. Possession notes: "Exlibris Joan. Josephi Drosche Dresda comeptis 1684", thus acquired by Johann Droschen, who can be found between 1678 and 1681 as a priest in the Saxon Schirgiswalde, and: "Nunc Jacobi Thaddaei Gersky [?] Can[onici] Acsidentis Buddessin 1727", probably "Now [in possession] of Jacob Thaddäus Gersky, Domherr Akzidentiar, 1727." Schirgiswalde was directly under the Cathedral of St. Petri in Bautzen. The cathedral lords there administered the Catholic possessions of the region. Jacob Thaddaeus Gersky was therefore a canon of the Bautzen Cathedral. As an Akzidentiar (Acidentii) he was specifically responsible in 1727 for the payment of special fees and charges (Akzidenzien) for the diocese and the cathedral chapter, among other things from the Catholic enclave Schirgiswalde.
