Goldschmitdt, Gothic & Renaissance Bookbindings I, 251-252. – Magnificently contemporaryly bound copy of the first edition of the complete quart-bible with the small-format episode of the beautiful, imaginative woodcuts by Tobias Stimmer (1539-1584), which were first published in Basel in an album with rhymes by Johann Fischart in 1576. The printer Thomas Guarinus (Gwarin, Guarin) had published a series of woodcuts with biblical scenes by Tobias Stimmer as "New Artificial Figures of Biblical Histories" (cf. Fairfax-Murray G 68) and had these 170 pictures of verses by Johann Fischart (1546-1591) accompanied. After the pressure of the above Bible, the sticks migrated to Strasbourg, where they moved from B. Jobin and later L. Zetzner were still used several times: "These cuts by Tobias Stimmer are excellently beautiful. Matthew Merian then took no less than a dozen examples of his Bible copper engravings with his sure judgment" (Schmidt). Thieme-Becker points out that the picture designs "have long been school-forming due to the abundance of the new in terms of scenes and choice and composition of the decorative apparatus" and still admired Peter Paul Rubens highly. The maps show the Paradise, the Holy Land (2, of which 1 with Egypt) and the Eastern Mediterranean (in the text). – Purposes with old-cut entries, title with notes, few spots, partly slightly tanned, here and there underscores in red and few red pen drawings in the woodcut vignettes. Volume II with some wormholes and underscores in black ink, here and there pale water margins. Overall, an exceptionally beautiful, uniform pair of the two volumes of this excellently edited and illustrated Vulgate. The blind-embossed covers with the portrait of Charles V on the front cover: "Carole mortales dubitant homo sisne deusve sunt tua sc[e]ptra hominis sed tua facta dei". On the back cover a portrait plate with the face of Duke Johann Friedrich of Saxony: "Victus eras acie fidei constantia tandem victorem ante homines fecit et ante deum". Goldschmidt mentions two very similar covers in his collection (No. 251 and 252) and notes that there were several of these records, both signed and unsigned. Foot also has a similar cover of 1582. The present copies are both dated to the year "1583" and bear the initials "K.L.R." as monogram of the owner. The portrait plates are surrounded by wide floral rolls with profile heads in tondi, puttes and a shield bearer with the initials "H.S" and a Christ Child (see Haebler II, Tables III/1).
