Volume I of the Hamburg Polyglot Bible, published in seven parts by the preacher David Wolder (1550-1604), working at the St. Petri-Kiche in Hamburg, illustrated with the beautiful woodcuts according to Jakob Mores (1540-1612), which were also used for the Bible prints of the Lüneburg stars. The Pentateuch is included with the first five books of Moses. "Wolder has made himself known especially in other circles through the publication of larger Bible works. Already in the issue of the Hebrew text of the Old Testament concerned by Elias Hutter, Wolder was sanctified. The work appeared after long preparations for Hamburg in 1587; although in some respects it is meritorious and at any rate much diligence and effort was related to the production, it found little sales. Wolder then published for himself a complete Bible in Greek, Latin and German; in four columns next to each other he printed the Septuagint, the Vulgate, the Latin translation of Pagnini and the German translation of Luther. The work was published in seven parts (usually in 3 volumes) in Folio Hamburg in 1596, printed by Jacob Lucius the Younger, a printer and publisher at that time very busy. The publisher then connected the Hutten edition of A. T.'s Hebrew text as the first volume with this Wolder-like polyglot and gave the whole (now four-volume) work the new title: 'Sacra biblia quadrilinguia' (ADB). – A little tanned or brown-spotted, otherwise well preserved specimen of the elaborate four-column print in a beautiful contemporary cover with Reformer role, the front cover with scenic crucifixion scene, the Eignerinitial "CKT" and the binding year "1615", and the later stamp of a historical school library.
