Göllner 59 – Very rare first German edition, first published in 1496 in Ulm by Reger under the title "Obsidionis Rhodie urbis descriptio" in Latin (GW 6003). The work consists of a compilation of various texts relating to the history of Rhodes and begins with the eyewitness report of the siege of Rhodes by the Ottomans under Mehmet II. 1480 by Guillaume Caoursin, Vice-Chancellor of the Order of St. John. Other texts include the 1481 earthquake, the death of Mehmet II, also in 1481, or the flight of Cem, the brother of Sultan Bayezid, to Rhodes in 1482 and his transfer to France in captivity. The woodcuts in this edition of Strasbourg are free recuts of the Ulm woodcut from 1496 in a simpler, in some cases somewhat rougher, though very expressive version. The description of the siege alone has been published in several editions in Latin since 1480. "The owner is referred to as Johannem Adelphum Argentinensem Physicum in the appropriation letter. He was born in Mühlungen near Strasbourg. Therefore he is also called in the translation of Marsil. Ficin. Johannen Adelphum Mülich" (Göllner). – Lightly browned throughout, partly a bit flecky. Single small lusures, two small corners. Sheet C4 with crack along the set mirror. Underside with a slight kink track. Issue renewed under partial restoration of the wrinkles. The woodcuts are almost consistent in remarkably good, high-contrast and burty print. In only a few German libraries detectable, in trade for decades no further specimen detectable.
