The philologist Valentin Erythräus (1521-1576) studied in Wittenberg, where he was a pupil of Luther and Melanchthon, before the humanist Johannes Sturm called him to Strasbourg in 1546, where for almost 30 years he taught as a professor of rhetoric at the university and wrote several writings on the textbooks of Melanchthon and Sturm.
