Ebhardt 73; Fowler 414; Kruft 76 f. – New edition of the Lyon edition of 1552, the first edition of Vitruv in France with the annotations of the scholar and architect Guillaume Philander. According to Jöcher, the edition of 1552 was "far preferable" to the first edition of Rome in 1544. Philander (actually G. Philandrier) was like the young Vignola and the humanist Cl. Tolomei member of the "Vitruvian Academy" in Rome, whose aim was to create a new edition of the Vitruv with new illustrations and explanatory alphabetical word index, which would then serve as the basis for a new translation into the bella lingua toscana. The ambitious project alone published Philander's Vitruv commentary, but, as Kruft laments, "Thinkings and Seeings of the 16th Century". In the 19th century, Vitruv was projected and hardly considered to be a fulfillment of the Academy's ideas.
