First edition of the main work of Danish archaeologist and philologist Peter Oluf Bröndsted (1780-1842), parallel to the present German edition also appeared a French edition. Bröndsted visited Greece for the first time in 1810, a few years before the Greeks' struggle for liberation against the Ottomans and the Philhellenes movement. In the winter of 1811/1812 he carried out excavations at the Temple of Apollo on the island of Kea and became the first Dane to participate in archaeological work in Greece. From 1820 to 1821 he traveled to Sicily and the Ionian Islands, where he was able to collect further material for his previous monograph. The work remained, however, fragmentary: of the planned eight volumes, only the present parts I and II appeared, in which Bröndsted dealt with his excavations at the Apollon temple on the island of Kea (part I) and the Parthenon on the Acropolis of Athens (part II). After his return to Copenhagen, he was appointed full professor of philology and archaeology and director of the royal coin and medal collection.
