The six-volume work was created between 1572 and 1618 and comprises about 1600 pages with over 600 city plans and views. Under the title Civitates orbis terrarum, views of all major and important cities in Europe, Asia, Africa and America were shown. In collaboration with renowned artists, the important work of view was created by the Flemish engraver Franz Hogenberg (1540-1590) and published under the editorship of Cologne theologian Georg Braun (1541-1622).
