Friederik Muller & Cue.,amsterm, 17.4.1923, No.165 (SW Figure);< Br>Private property, USA;Private ownership, Vienna August von Pettenkofen was born in Vienna in 1822. He received his artistic training from 1834 to 1840 at the Vienna Academy under Leopold Kupelwieser. After his academy, he went on numerous study trips to Italy and France, where he got to know the works of the landscape painters of the school of Barbizon. However, Hungary should become of utmost importance to him. From 1851 he traveled there again and again. The small village of Szolnok an der Tisza became its main destination in the following years, especially in the summer months. The special lighting conditions of the Hungarian lowlands fascinated not only Pettenkofen. Following his example, artists of friends, including Tina Blau, Theodor von Hörmann and Johann Gualbert Raffalt, moved to Szolnok, where an artist colony was formed, whose members were committed to open-air painting very early on. The shimmering sunlight, the mist of the plain as well as the villages and their inhabitants were their preferred themes.
This work also shows a picturesque subject from Hungary, a couple in love with a "Standdichein". Pettenkofen painted several versions of this (cf. Weixlgärtner, vol.I, p. 114 and Table XIX). In one version the lovers kiss themselves standing over the fence, in another version they have a familiar conversation. The story is a simple one known for centuries: a young love that gathers together across all obstacles. Here the lovers do not let themselves be stopped from the fence and the young man on his donkey catches a kiss of his beloved on the other side of the fenced village. In a pencil study (Lot 639), Pettenkofen holds the fence separating the pair with safe lines and soft shades. This delicate sketch documents the artist's working methods in an impressive way. In detail he conceived his preliminary studies, which then served as the basis for oil paintings. (MLS)
