Probably bought there by the grandfather of the importer around 2,360 RM;
since then in family possession (private property, Austria)Friedrich Gauermann, born 1807 in Miesenbach in Lower Austria, was the son of landscape painter Jakob Gauermann. Together with his brother Carl, he received his first artistic training from his father. As early as 1821, studies of nature and copies were made according to the Old Masters, which reveal Gauermann's connection with nature and his precise observational powers. He took over the baroque tradition of making sketches as the basis for the executed painting from his father, and he will maintain this method of working until the end of his creative career.
A pen drawing on this work is now in the collection of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (Fig. 1) A handwritten note on the sheet proves that Gauermann produced two versions of the painting for different clients: "Executed for H. Büllhuber. 1827. / 20 Dukaten" and a later addition with pencil "And for H. v. Neuhaus. / 20 Dukaten". From 1825 Gauermann undertook regular study trips to the Austrian Alps and the Salzkammergut. There he created the sketches with which he created paintings in the studio, which had the theme of life in the countryside with the female dairy, grazing animals and alpine scenery. In this early work - created in 1828 - Gauermann shows an idyllic scenery with these very protagonists (senner, cows and goats), but the view of Lake Wolfgang with St. Gilgen and the striking mountains that fall to the lake shore (Großer Sparber and Bleckwand) is already an early example of the representation of a really seen landscape that is not of imagination of the artist.
