Description
Ferdinand G. Waldmüller
The right bank of the Traun in Bad Ischl with the old wooden bridge
1834Private collection, Vienna"Nature is eternal truth; in its appearances, nothing is common in its forms." (F.G. Waldmüller)
In the 1830s Waldmüller discovered the landscape of the Salzkammergut. Since 1831 he travelled almost every year to this rich area for him in motifs, which he was able to capture wonderfully. At the beginning of August 1834 he went to Ischl. Sketches in the drawing books he took along on trips give us an idea of his itinerary. His path led via Vöcklabruck and Ebensee to Ischl, from there further to Hallstatt, to Lake Altause, Lake Grundl and to Loser. (See Feuchtmüller, Waldmüller, 1996, pp. 85-88)
Waldmüller was not the first artist to explore the Salzkammergut picturesquely. His friend Friedrich Gauermann had already discovered this picturesque cultural space, which Upper Austria and Styria share, before him. It is known that Waldmüller was in the possession of some landscape sketches of Gauermann and in the 1830s, when he began to deal with landscape painting, probably under the influence of this great landscape painter.
Present work shows the right bank of Traun with the old wooden bridge in Ischl. The background form, quite truthfully, the loser and the Dead Mountain with the Schönberg. Naturfare was Waldmüller's supreme ambition. In a small format, he captured a landscape section that captivates with subtle coloration. The facades of the town houses on the river bank, illuminated by the sun, stand out in their radiant ochre from the greenish shimmering waters of the Traun in the foreground as well as the blue-green mountain backdrop in the background. The randomly selected section thus offers a visual experience that places great emphasis on concreteness and is regarded as an early example in Waldmüller's oeuvre, where the direct nature experience is first and foremost.
