Description
Ferdinand G. Waldmüller
View to the Reiteralpe in the Ramsau near Berchtesgaden Oil on wood; framedSigned and dated at the bottom middle: Waldmüller / 1836.
Rupert Feuchtmüller, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller. 1793-1865. Life, writings, works, Vienna/Munich 1996, p. 469, WV-Nr. 517 (SW-Fig.) ("The Taubensee with the Steinberg in the Ramsau near Berchtesgaden (View to the Reiteralpe)")
The mountain range of the ReiterALpe extends along the border between Bavaria and Salzburg. The Bavarian part is located in the Berchtesgadener Land, in the municipality of Ramsau. Below the Reiteralpe are the Hintersee and the Taubensee. In 1836 Waldmüller was proven to be in Ischl, in the Salzkammergut, and perhaps his journey continued to Bavaria at that time. Especially the mountains and lakes around Berchtesgaden enjoyed great popularity with the landscape painters of the Biedermeier, and offered numerous interesting motifs. Thus exist both by Friedrich Gauermann (comparisons: Feuchtmüller, F. Gauermann, 1962, Fig. 42), as well as Franz Steinfeld's almost identical views of the Reiteralpe with the peaks of the Stadelhorn, Wagendrischelhorn and the Hohen Gerstfeld.
Present view impresses with its natural fidelity with all its fine details and the warm light, which makes this work an outstanding work among Waldmüller's landscapes. With a sharp view he captured the mountain massif with the rugged, steeply sloping rock formations, in whose valleys still small snow fields remained. In addition, Waldmüller designed the foreground with Bergernhof, Almwiesen and Grainfeld. As a staffage, he used two tiny figures who perform their work in the shadow of the court, and formed a romantic counterpoint to the grandeur of the mighty mountain peaks. (MLS)
