Thomas Fearnley
Ships in stormy seas Oil on canvas; framedSigned and dated at the bottom right: Th. Fearnley 1832
Private property, Austria
The Norwegian painter with English roots began his artistic training in Oslo in 1819. From 1821 Thomas Fearnley continued his studies at the Academy in Copenhagen and then went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. From there he undertook many study trips, preferably through Sweden and Norway, where in 1826 he met Johan Christian Clausen Dahl (1788-1857) and became friends with him. In 1829-30 Fearnley lived in Dresden to study under Dahl. The 1830s were again marked by many journeys, especially often he stayed in England, Italy, Switzerland, but also in Salzburg and Munich. Dahl advised Fearnley, like himself, to specialize in Norwegian landscape painting, but Fearnly continued to create views from all over Europe inspired by his travels. In 1842 the artist died of typhus at the age of 39. Many of his works are now in the collections of the National Museum in Oslo and the National museum in Stockholm. (MLS)
