Anton Romako received his education at the Vienna and Munich Academy. In 1850 he returned from Munich to his hometown of Vienna and studied at the private school of Carl Rahl until 1853, where he specialized in historical painting. In the fight he separated from his teacher and spent a long time in the studio of Carl Werner in Venice. In 1857 he travelled to Rome, where he spent almost two decades. This time was probably the most successful and most beautiful in his life, both private and artistic. He founded a family and was able to establish himself as an artist. Above all, his genre scenes about the rural environment of Roman Campagna inspired his international audience. With these paintings he celebrated successes and they brought him financial security.
Around half of his active artist life (from 1857-1876) spent Romako in Rome. This work was also produced during this time. In large format and very close-sighted he shows a young Italian woman who mows the grain with her sickle. Concentrated and serious, the young woman is doing her harvest work. Warm, vibrant colours such as yellow and red dominate the representation, and with the help of a very attractive light-dark painting, the figure of the woman appears as modeled. Romako has captured here a moment from the everyday life of the Italian rural population virtuosously in his formal language, which seeks its unrivalled perfection. (MS)
