Carpet dealer in Cairo um 1892/93Signed at the bottom right: A. L. Mielich Private Possession, Germany Compare: Herbert Zemen (eds.), The Oriental painter Alphons Mieich. 1863-1929. Biography materials, Vienna 2013, p. 18, E 751 (shopping of prayer carpets in Cairo); 20, E 534 (Teppichhandel in Cairo).
Alphons Leopold Mielich was born in Klosterneuburg in 1863 with the bourgeois name Mielighofer. For the time being, he sought an officer's career, but had to finish it for health reasons in 1889. In the same year, immediately after his retirement, Mielich visited Egypt for the first time, where he went until the outbreak of the First World War. ==References====External links== For study purposes, Mielich lived in Paris in 1889/92, where he trained by copying orient pictures. From Paris, he undertook extensive study trips, including to England, Spain and Tunis, but his interest soon came exclusively to the Orient, and especially to Egypt, which he travelled 11 times in the coming years. In 1894 he became a member of the cooperative of fine artists in Vienna (Künstlerhaus). On behalf of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, he eventually went to Jerusalem in 1901 as an artistic companion of the Orientalist Alois Musil and from there to Transjordan. His task was to copy the murals in the Kusejr Amra caliph castle in the Peträ desert. The artist spent his last years with his family in Salzburg, where he died in 1929.Present work shows a picturesque street scene in an oriental city. A carpet dealer presents his goods to a customer who may have already made his choice by lifting the index finger. The event takes place in front of a high building with magnificent ornaments, whose entrance area is in the shade, and from which the figures stand out in their colorful robes. Such colourful and detailed images of the Orient, executed in skillful fine painting, enjoyed great popularity among the public and brought a touch of exoticism into western salons by acquiring them.
