Private collection, AustriaThe signature was applied directly to the chalk-containing primer of the wooden beam and served as the basis for the subsequent painterly execution. The IRR recordings reveal the preparation of the composition: the geometric construction of the architecture, the perspective of the throne stages as well as the arrangement and proportion of the figures are particularly evident. At the same time, individual changes and corrections can be understood, which testify to the artist's search for the final form.
This method corresponds to that of the Italian panel painting of the 15th century. In the 19th century, the practice was established to define the composition of the painting first on the prepared wood base and then gradually turn it into colour. The signature is far more than just a technical preliminary stage: it documents the artistic conception of the work and enables us to understand the process of creation behind the painting that is visible today.
This panel thus offers a particularly rare interplay of visible painting and technically developed signature. While the finished painting presents the artistic concept in its colored final shape, the IRR investigation also opens a look at the creative process underlying this execution. In this combination of finished artwork and visible work process lies the special art-historical attraction of the present work.
