Description
Nuremberg Master Circumference of Michael Volgemut (1434 - 1519)
Salvator Mundi with the twelve apostles
around 1490
Oil on wood; framed
47,5 x 129 cmThe painting is characteristic of the tradition of Nuremberg Table Painting around 1490. In the centre Christ appears as Salvator Mundi, as World Ruler and Redeemer, accompanied by the twelve Apostles. The representation combines the sacred function of the image with a representative, strictly ordered figure composition, which corresponds to the pictorial language of late Gothic Nuremberg painting.
For the original function of a painting, its design as a predella is of particular importance. Predella is the most wooden, flat base of a late medieval altarpiece, which mediates between the canteen and the actual retabel. It not only closes the altar architecturally, but also combines the content and composition of the altar table with the above picture programme. Predellen often bore representations that complemented, deepened or narrativeally continued the theme of the main retabel, for example with reference to the happening of salvation, the life of Christ or the Passion. In this context, the depiction of the Salvator Mundi with the twelve Apostles is also to be understood as part of an overarching theological picture program. The work is therefore of interest not only as an independent late Gothic table painting, but also as a testimony to the liturgical and pictorial programmatic function of Nuremberg Altar Retabel around 1490. In his stylistic proximity to the workshop tradition of Michael Wolgemut, it provides an impressive insight into Nuremberg painting at the transition to the Renaissance.
