Description
Jan Mostaert attributed to Christ with crown of thorns
Oil on wood; framed
26,5 x 20 cm The body is frontally facing the viewer, while the head is slightly tilted sideways and the view is lowered; it appears to be completely turned into itself. The hands with the visible wound marks are crossed in front of the chest. A bright red garment, which partially releases the upper body, falls off the shoulders in heavy wrinkles and effectively sets off from the dark background. By abandoning any spatial indication, attention is focused entirely on the posture and expression of the figure. The fine execution, the calm, concentrated figure arrangement and the luminous colority are in the tradition of the old Dutch painting, to which Jan Mostaert (c. 1475-1555) was also committed. Mostaert is one of the most important Dutch painters of the Renaissance and is known for his religious depictions and portraits. Secured biographical traditions are sparse; the traditional life description goes mainly back to Karel van Manders Schilder-boeck, which appeared in Haarlem in 1604. This painting corresponds in its painting manner to the characteristics characteristic of Mostaert.
The dendrochronological examination of the image carrier showed that the painting could have been made at the earliest from 1480; the date of fall of the wood was earlier. Taking into account that Mostaert was born around 1475, an execution is to be ruled out in this decade, so that the painting may not have been created until later years. This temporal approach is also important for the comparison with Lucas van Leyden (c. 1494-1533). Of the approximately two decades younger artist, an almost identical reproduction of this Christ type is handed down. Due to the material temporal arrangement of the present painting, it may be assumed that Lucas van Leyden could have served as a template.
