Description
Franconian Master around 1500
Saint Margareta and Saint Apollonia
Oil on wood; framed Virgo Margareta and Apollonia may have formed the inside of the left predella wing due to their smaller scale. The remaining three panels are probably to be addressed as fragments of the wing insides of the main shrine. Saints Matthias and Erasmus were probably depicted together on the left wing, the holy king on the right. It is to be assumed that on both wings two picture fields were arranged on top of each other, so that today separate panels were originally part of a uniform structure divided into two zones.
The four panels illustrate the construction of a late medieval wing altar with predella and main shrine. Each of them is a testimony to the pictorial art of their time, and in context they also give insight into the original image program. We thank Dr. Björn Blauensteiner, Belvedere, Vienna, for his scientific support in cataloging. 1500
