[ARUNDEL SOCIETY]. Lot of four chromolithographs by masters of the Italian Renaissance. London: Arundel Society, 1858-1867. Interesting nucleus of four large chromolithographies published by the Arundel Society, founded in London in 1848 as Society for Promoting the Knowledge of Art with the aim of spreading to the British public the knowledge of the great Italian masters through reproductions of high quality, in particular of the frescoes of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Supported, among others, by John Ruskin (1819-1900), the Society contributed to the rediscovery of Italian art in Victorian England, in significant consonance with the aesthetic ideals of the Preraffaellites, whose movement was born in 1848. The tables, distributed mainly to the associates through an annual subscription and sold also separately, constituted high-quality editorial productions: in the 1960s the major chromolithographs could cost individually about one pound or more, a sum equivalent to several days of salary of a qualified worker and higher than the weekly pay of many categories of workers.
