[VATICAN MUSEUMS] The Pio-Clementino Museum [CON:] The Chiaramonti Museo added to the Pio Clementino. Rome: Ludovico Mirri, 1782-1807; Antonio D'Este and Gaspare Capparoni, 1808-1843. Monumental collection in elegant coeve ligatures dedicated to the collections of ancient sculpture of the Vatican Museums, one of the most important monuments of European archaeological publishing between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Pio-Clementino Museum, illustrated by Giovanni Battista and Ennio Quirino Visconti, systematically documents the collections of antiquities constituted by the Popes Clemente XIV and Pius VI, contributing decisively to the diffusion of neoclassical taste. The lot also includes the Chiaramonti Museum, dedicated to the new galleries wanted by Pius VII, with the first volume published in 1808 by Filippo Aurelio Visconti and the following two, with descriptions by Antonio Nibby, published respectively in 1837 and 1843, which complete the documentation of the new Vatican acquisitions. 10 volumes, folio (608 x 420mm, 590 x 415mm volume), 10 portraits, 2 plants and 570 tables (some flowering). Detail of the tables: 1) Pio-Clementino: 7 volumes, foreheads engraved with papal coat of arms, 7 engraved portraits, plan of the museum folded, and 379 engraved tables: of which 355 numbered (4 tables on 2 sheets) 2 tables bis, 3 not numbered, 4 tables with views of the Museum, 15 marked with letters. 2) Chiaramonti: 3 volumes: Frontespices engraved with papal coat of arms, 3 portraits, 138 numbered tables + 3 tables marked with letters. 2.1) Amaranzian Monuments, (part of the 3 volume of the Chiaramonti Museum) 1 Map and 50 tables (a few pairs of tables on one sheet). Neoclassical binding of the first decades of the 19th century in full calfskin with gold geometric border to the plates, decorations and titles on gold dowel on the back, golden cuts, marbled looks (light defects) Binding in half Moroccan red with decorations, and gold title on theback for the third volume of Chiaramonte (defenses).
