N.B. ==References== Garden festival in a castle park
Oil on canvas; framed
88 x 140,5 cmThe painting is in the tradition of the Dutch-Flemish Garden Festivals, which enjoyed great popularity with courtly and bourgeois collectors around 1600 and in the following decades. David Vinckboons (1576-1632) exerted the greatest influence on this genre, on which the painter refers here. Individual scenes from his depictions were taken and inserted into the broader festival of the Schlosspark. Thus, in the foreground, almost in the centre of the composition, appears the sitting, elegantly dressed woman, in front of whom a young man lies half in her lap. The same group can be found in the "Lockeren Gesellschaft im Schlosspark" from around 1610 in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (Cat. 130; cf. Ertz & Nitze-Ertz 2016, p. 166, No. 45) as well as in the eponymous representation of 1619, which was offered in 2010/11 at the gallery Johnny Van Haeften in London (Kat. 132; cf. Ertz & Nitze-Ertz 2016, p. 168, No. 46).
Even closer is the relationship with the "Lockeren Gesellschaft im Schlosspark" of 1610 in the Gemäldegalerie of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (Inv.-No. 592). There we meet not only the sitting woman with the half lying man, but also the elegantly dressed lady, whom the gentleman standing next to her invites to dance. The catalogue of works by Klaus Ertz and Christina Nitze-Ertz also cites a engraving by Nicolaes de Bruyn from 1604, which is considered to be a common template (cf. Ertz & Nitse-Ertz 2016, p. 376, no. 126). With its finely set figures, atmospheric landscape space and contrasting color, the painting also convinces with its high painterly quality.
