The baptism of Christ
Oil on wood; framed Private property, GermanyThe present depiction of Christ's baptism is a characteristic example of Rottenhammer's work. The multi-figure composition is embedded in a perspectiveally impressive river landscape with banks and foresting. On the shore, numerous figures, many of them seated, are lined up far into the background and guide the viewer's gaze into the depth of the image. God the Father appears in the center of heaven, surrounded by angels. The radiant fullness of light that surrounds it effectively sets off from the dark background.
The overwhelming colour, working with strong contrasts, and the play of light and dark, for example in the bright incarnate of the figures and in the glowing color of the robes in front of the dark forest background, are still bound to a late-manieristic feeling. In bright colours, the artist creates a well-composed work whose fine, detailed execution of the figures shows his masterful skill.
