Description
Willem Claesz. Heda
Still life with Wan-Li plates, Romans and tin plates Oil on wood; framedSigned and dated at the bottom left corner of the table: Heda 1631
German private collection
The 1631 dated still life is a comparatively early example of Heda's simple, monochrome breakfast images. Several precious pieces of dishes are arranged on a stone table. The horizontal aspect of the table is emphasized by the tin plate, the knife with a pearl-decorated handle in the diamond pattern and the plate made of Chinese porcelain. A green Roman uses a vertical element. The precious dishes, a roll, a peeled lemon, whose long, winding bowl falls over the edge of the table, as well as hazelnuts and oysters point to a festive meal. Above the picture lies the silence that descends over a table when the last guests have gone. The subtle light reflections on the surfaces are striking and at the same time characteristic of Heda's still life. The light seems to fall in here through a window obliquely behind the viewer. The window panes are reflected twice in the cup of the Roman, more discreetly in the porcelain plate and in the silver spoon. Heda
Still Life with a Wan-Li Plate, a "Roman" Plate, and a Pewter Plate oil on panel; framedprivate collection, Germany
