Description

David Teniers the Younger
The ball players
Oil on wood; framedMonogrammed at the bottom left: D(T)Besides archery and bowling, the ball game counted in 16th and 17th centuries. ==References====External links==* Official website As an integral part of village festivities, it found its early entrance into the art of painting, as shown by works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder as well as Hans Sebald and Barthel Beham. The painters of the 17th century built on this pictorial tradition. In the early 19th century, they were developed further (cf. Reuter 2005, p. 288). Among them was David Teniers the Younger, who took up the subject of ball players in several paintings. He preferred to choose the moment immediately before the throw, in which the tension of the game reaches its climax. In the present version, too, his attention is focused on the course of the game, which extends over the entire width of the image format. In the center is a player in white shirt and red beret. He bends forward, leans on his knee with one hand and holds the ball in the other, which he lets run over the ground at the next moment. The game track itself is merely hinted at and is opened up by several figures who watch the thrower with keen attention (cf. Reuter 2005, p. 288). Following the direction of the throw, Teniers lets the composition extend from the left to the right side of the picture and thus directs the viewer's gaze through the action. At the same time, a wide landscape opens up in depth, giving space and atmosphere to the game. Above it is a blue sky with orange-tinted clouds, which may point to an evening mood. The loose, sweeping style of painting combines figures, landscape and sky to form a closed unity; the tense moment of the litter sounds out in the summer expanse of the scenery (see Reuter 2005, p. 288).
