Description
Jan Brueghel the Younger and Pieter van Avont
The holy family with Johannesknaben in a landscape around 1640
Oil on copper, parquetted; framed Signed lower left: J. Breughel's private Austrian property is depicted sitting on a stone, dressed in a red robe over which a blue coat is draped. In her womb rests the Child Christ, who with outstretched arms turns to the young John the Baptist. This is depicted with the back to the viewer and gives the child an apple; next to it is the crusade with white ribbon. Sitting on Mary's right hand, holding his head in his hand, Joseph attentively observes what is happening. In front of the Holy Family stands a lamb, facing the John's canopy, while a parrot appears to the left of Mary's head. A fruit-bearing tree, dense bushes and other trees capture the character scene. In the right half of the picture, the landscape opens up to a meadow with animals that turns into a forest. Gentle clouds create a mild light mood, birds invigorate the sky. The foreground is decorated by numerous forest flowers that underline the idyll of the portrayal.
The New Testament scene of calm on the flight to Egypt was enjoyed in the 17th century. ==References====External links==* Official website* Official website Together with Pieter von Avont, he created a "Holy Family with John and Angels in Landscape" in the 1630s, which is now located in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (Inv.-No. 1683). Another example is the work "Maria mit Kind und Johannes in waldiger Landschaft", painted by Brueghel d. J. together with Hendrick van Balen (cf. Klaus Ertz, Jan Breughel the Younger 1601 – 1678. The paintings with critical oeuvre catalogue, Freren 1984, p. 310, Cat. No. 141, with fig.).
All in the sense of a painting in Flanders in the first half of the 17th century. In the 19th century, the practice of joint execution by two specialized painters was also developed in collaboration with the present painting. According to Dr. Klaus Ertz, this is a collaborative work: The landscape, flowers, plants and birds come from Jan Brueghel the Younger, while the statue of the figure and the lamb are attributed to Pieter van Avonts (see expert report by Dr. Claus Ertz).
