BRUNI, Leonardo (1370-1444). Book entitled Flying Eagle that if delights of ancient scripture. Venice: Quarengi, 1506. Copy from study of this rare vulgar edition of one of the most fortunate compilations on the history of ancient Rome, work traditionally attributed to Leonardo Bruni, attribution confirmed by the most recent studies while recognizing Guido da Pisa's contribution to the drafting of the text. The work traces the events of Rome from its origins through an original interweaving of history and legend, including episodes related to the war of Troy, to Julius Caesar, Cato and other protagonists of classical antiquity, according to a narration destined to a vulgar audience. The remarkable editorial success of the work is testified by the four incunabole editions published between 1492 and 1497, followed by the present Venetian edition.
