[EBRAICA - PEOPLE'S PRINTS] Iudicium Sanguinarium Iudaeorum contra Christum Salvatorem Mundi. 1585 (s.l.; s.e.) Great press not present in any inventory of devotional subject depicting Christ's trial before the Sanhedrin, with Caiaphas and other Jewish priests intent on uttering the Saviour's condemnation. The composition is a significant testimony of the anti-Jewish iconography widespread in Europe of the early modern age, in which the accusation of deicide directed at the Jewish people found ample expression in the figurative production destined to popular devotion and religious propaganda. For compositional installation and organization of the scene, the press has close affinity with the great incision in three sheets published in Padua at the beginning of the seventeenth century and signed by Francesco Bertelli, son of Pietro Berttel. The latter was active in the Venetian city as a calcographic publisher since the end of the 16th century and as a printer between 1589 and 1596. It cannot be excluded that this sheet represents a previous iconographic model, perhaps attributable to the environment of the Bertelli workshop, later expanded and reworked in the most famous edition of Padua, or that both engravings derive from the same prototype today unidentified.
