VALERIUS MAXIMUS (1st century A.D.). Facta et dicta memorabilia. Venice: P.F., B.R., S. F., Z.F, July 1, 1478. Rare incunabola edition (one passage in a registered RBH auction) of the famous collection of exempla by Valerio Massimo, one of the most read and widespread historical works between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Built during the reign of Tiberius, the text collects hundreds of episodes taken from Roman and Greek history, ordained according to virtues, vices and exemplary cases, with the intention of providing moral models and arguments to the speakers. Throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries the Facta et dicta memorabilia was one of the main instruments of humanistic formation and one of most frequently consulted historical repertoires. The edition, curated by the humanist Bonus Accursius, belongs to the very rare production of the Venetian typography P.F., B.R., S.F, Z. F., in all probability a cordata that brought together more publishers probably identified by the initials and known, at the current state of knowledge, exclusively for this volume. The typographical characters (112R and 112Gk) seem to be the same ones employed by Jacobus de Fivizzano and Andreas de Paltasichis (British Museum Catalogue of Books Printed in the XVth Century V, 266) Folio (288 x 200mm) 136 cards, including the initial white paper, first paper with the supplied prologue handwritten in the coeval or ancient era with initial miniata, text in Roman character on 36 lines, spaces for initials with guide letters (paper with the requested prologue manuscript, sporadic blooms). Legature of the XIX century in full Moroccan with gold frames to the plates, titles and decorations in gold to the back. (1)
