VESALIUS, Andreas (1514-1564). De humani corporis fabrica libri septem. Basel: Johannes Oporinus, June 1543. Study copy of the first edition of one of the greatest masterpieces of medical-scientific literature and milestone in the history of anatomy. With Fabrica, Vesalius revolutionized the knowledge of the human body, subjecting the Galenic tradition to the verification of dissection and direct observation. Professor at the Study of Padua, he conceived the work as a systematic treatment of the body, from bones and muscles to blood vessels, nerves and organs, to the heart and brain. The text is accompanied by an extraordinary iconographic apparatus, an integral part of the scientific and didactic project. The illustrations were made in Venice under the supervision of Vesalio, within the Tiziano school and with the possible contribution of Jan Stephan van Calcar; the woods were then sent to Basel with precise instructions for their arrangement. The famous xylographies exercised a lasting influence on the anatomical iconography of Europe; particularly characteristic are the capilettera istoriati with putti intent on dissection and other anatomic practices.
