[LEGATURE - ENOLOGY]. Lambruschini, Luigi (1776-1854). Empty binding to the arms of Cardinal Luigi Lambruschini. [Rome, 1831-1854 circa]. Singular binding to the arms of Cardinal Luigi Lambruschini, whose decoration seems to be conceived as a real heraldic rebus on the surname of the owner. The cardinal coat of arms engraved on the plates, characterized by three vines and surrounded by a rich frame of branches, pampions and grape bunches, establishes in fact an obvious game of references between the name Lambruschini and Lambrusco. The whole thus assumes the character of a sort of talking weapon, in which the reason of the vine jokingly alludes to the surname of the cardinal. Barnabita, Luigi Lambruschini was created cardinal by Gregory XVI in 1831 and became Secretary of State from 1836 to 1846, establishing himself as one of the most influential personalities of the Roman Curia and figuring himself among the main candidates for the pontifical throne in the conclave of 1846. Folio (315 × 210 mm). Binding in full calf to the arms of Cardinal Luigi Lambruschini, with large cardinal coat of arms engraved in gold at the center of the plates and framed by a double frame, the inner one adorned with pampions and grapes in evident allusion to the name Lambrusschini and Lambrusco.
