MIR HASHIM (attributed to). Portrait of Emperor Moghul Jahangir. [North India, Rajasthan or Punjab, second half of the seventeenth century]. Refined portrait of Emperor Moghul Nur al-Din Jahangir (1569-1627), the fourth ruler of the Moghoul dynasty, depicted in profile with the globe in his right hand and the left leaning on the hilt of the scimitar. Richly dressed and adorned with many threads of pearls, Jahangir still appears young but accompanied by symbols of imperial dignity. Particularly significant is the patka wrapped at the sides, in which there are motifs related to the Rajput textile tradition and geometric decorations of Islamic matrix, in harmony with the dual cultural heritage of the Moghul court. The miniature resumes a successful iconographic model of the sovereign and is attributed to Mir Hashim, an active painter at the courts of Jahangir, Shah Jahan and, later, Aurangzeb. Two Persian inscriptions, probably later, identify the subject as "Badshah Nur al-Din Jahangir" and carry down the attribution "Amal-e Amir Hashim" (Amir Hashim's Opera); the spelling of the name Hashim, however, has an abnormal form, an element that suggests caution in interpreting the inscription as an autograph signature. The work, dating back to the second half of the seventeenth century, could have been originally destined for an album of portraits, according to a practice widely diffused in the figurative culture Moghul. (A)mir Hashim (also Mir Hashim) was the most gifted and recognized painter of the courts of the sovereigns Moghil Jahangir, Shah Jahan (1628-58) and Aurangzeb (1658-1707), in his first reign period. Miniature on polyte paper (200 × 110 mm) inserted in a paper frame decorated with golden floral and vegetable motifs, of the following period, a total of 335 × 215 mm. Sporadici forellini and short traces of tarlo, without compromising the overall quality of the thumbnail. (1)
