[PHARI MINIATURE]. Radha in the night wait of Krishna. [North India, Pahari school, probably Kangra, 18th century]. Refined miniature Pahari depicting Radha in the night wait of Krishna, set in a locus amoenus near a stream. The gopes, isolated in the landscape and with a flower in the right hand, look behind their backs while waiting for the beloved. The scene is dominated by the large tree that occupies the left part of the composition, rendered with a meticulous foliage, while the river, clouds and vegetation of the background are treated with greater softness. Particularly accurate also the face, hair and clothing of the female figure. The subject belongs to the lucky iconography of love and separation between Radha and Krishna, central theme of painting in northern India. The composition could also be traced back to the tradition of the ragamala, in which moods and loving situations are associated with musical modes: in this case the scene would express the feeling of separation and expectation of the beloved (viraha). The attribution to the Pahari school, probably within Kangra, is suggested by the delicacy of the female figure and by the particular sensitivity in the rendering of the landscape. Miniature on paper (255 × 295 mm) within double border, the inner golden one with thin orange threads and the outer blue one profiled in gold, yellow and white; mounted within a subsequent frame in fabric with polychrome floral patterns, probably from the 19th century. Excellent conservation status. (1)
