[RAJPUT MINIATURE]. Great tiger hunting scene with elephants. [Northwestern India, probably Rajasthan, late XVII-early XVIII century]. Spectacular hunting scene to the tiger, of school Rajput but strongly indebted to the tradition of painting Moghul, characterized by a particularly dynamic and richly populated composition. The hunt is represented at the climax: the tiger, already hit by three arrows, lies on a rocky leap while numerous hunters, on foot and on the back of five elephants, converge towards the prey. At the center emerges an elephant with red palanquin, on which sits a high-ranking character flanked by two mahuts: it is possible that the figure intends to represent the Emperor Jahangir (1569-1627), but the identification cannot be considered certain. The scene develops within a wide landscape marked by heights, rocks and dense vegetation, among which more armed patrols appear; in the background, a detailed urban view introduces an evocative effect of depth. The hunt with elephants, a theme particularly lucky in the art of court Moghul, becomes here an opportunity for a choral representation in which the variety of figures, animals and landscape combines with the lively colorism proper to painting Rajput. The work is an interesting example of the rajasthani reworking of the models of the Moghul imperial miniature, probably between the end of the XVII and the beginning of the XVIII century. Miniature on paper (330 × 440 mm), within double polychrome border adorned with golden folioceous patterns in turn; mounted within the next rigid cardboard frame, probably of the late 19th century, richly decorated with polychrome floral motifs. Very good conditions, with some color falls, especially in correspondence of the faces, and general signs of the time. (1)
