[MOGHUL MINIATURE]. King Bahram Gur reveals the dishonesty of Governor Rast Rowshan. [India, provincial Moghul school, late seventeenth century]. Refined miniature illustration of an episode of the Haft Peykar () by Nezami Ganjavi (ca. 1141-1209). The scene depicts the moment when Bahram Gur, discovered the corruption of his own Governor Rast Rowshan, forces him to dig up and return the wealth stolen from the population. At the center of the composition some men extract from a large pit three jars full of treasures, while a fourth has already been brought to light; on the right the governor, richly clothed, presents himself to the sovereign under the gaze of two armed men. The upper part further develops the story through the figure of a shepherd with his own flock, allusion to the episode that in the poem leads Bahram to understand the governor's betrayal: the shepherder had in fact punished his own guard dog after discovering that he had agreed with the wolves to the harm of the flock. In the background is the royal palace, framed by rock formations and vegetation, while on the left two wild animals recall the traditional association of Bahram Gur with hunting. Particularly happy is the yield of rocks and foliage, in a composition that testifies to the fortune of the classics of Persian literature in the figurative culture of India Moghul. Miniature on paper (235 × 265 mm), applied on cardboard support and mounted within green canvas pass-partout with inner band woven in gold with wavy motifs. Generally very good storage conditions. (1)
