[ISTRIA] FLORIANTSCHITSCH DE GRIENFELD, Johann (1691-1757). Two sheets depicting the Istrian area coming from the map "Ducatus Carnioliae Tabula Chorographica" Ljubljana, 1744. Two sheets belonging to the monumental and rare (no passage in auction of the complete specimen, RBH) map of the Duchy of Carniola published in Ljubljana in 1744 by Johann Dimas Floriantschitsch de Grinfeld, the most important Slovenian cartographer of the eighteenth century. The work, in scale 1:111,000, engraved by Abraham Kaltschmidt and composed of eleven large sheets, represents the first scientific topographic survey of the entire Duchy, then part of the Habsburg Monarchy. As a result of more than a decade of field survey, the map is a milestone in the cartography of Central Europe and remains the main geographical reference of the region for most of the 18th century. Particularly rare, it is estimated the circulation to only 500 specimens, has never been offered in auction and are currently known only 6 specimens in public collections Two calcographic sheets (490 x 670mm about each) map legend and scale of distances (small tears to the margins).
