[MICROGRAPHY] BUZZI, Vincenzo (1798-1870). The Eagle that contains The clemency of Tito by Abate Pietro Metastasio...Reggio, 1824 Rare and refined example of 19th-century micrographs by Vincenzo Buzzi, one of the most important Italian micrographers of the 19th century. Entirely manuscript and dedicated to His Royal Highness Francesco IV Archduke of Austria, Duke of Modena, Reggio and Mirandola, the work contains the text of the Clemence of Tito by Pietro Metastasio, distributed with extraordinary calligraphic ability in the central eagle, in the lateral coats of arms and in the ornamental motifs of the composition. The author inserted appropriate reading instructions, specifying: "You begin to read the rostrum of the Eagle in line by line up to the book, poscia..." , guiding the reader through the path of the text. Born in Lentigione in 1798, Buzzi practiced as a travelling private teacher after his involvement in the motions of 1821 and distinguished himself for complex micrographic compositions, in which images and portraits are formed by texts written in very minute characters. The present work belongs to the small corpus of his known works, which includes compositions dedicated to the Secchia Rapita by Tassoni and Napoleon I. No work by Buzzi is recorded on the auction market, a circumstance that underlines the rarity of this original testimony of the 19th century Italian artistic calligraphy.
