TIEPELO, Giandomenico (1727-1804), by Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770). Bearded old man. 1757-1762. Beautiful proof of the last table of the first book of the Collection of Heads, famous series of heads of character engraved by Giandomenico Tiepolo from inventions of his father Giambattista. The first nucleus was built before the departure to Madrid in 1762 and included twenty-seven subjects; after the death of his father in 1770 Giandomenico resumed the project, bringing it together to sixty etchings divided into two books of thirty tables each. The figures - old, philosophers and oriental characters, often bearded and with turbans - derive from Giambattista's Fantasy Heads and are part of the tradition of the heads of character, with an evident precedent in the East Head of the Grechetto. The Old Bearded, executed between 1757 and 1762, closes the first book of the series. Etching and burin, 170 × 122 mm. (1)
