[PHOTOGRAPHY] LUSWERGH, Brothers. Collection of about twenty albums depicting the sculptures of Giovanni Maria Benzoni. Rome, about 1860. Important and homogeneous nucleus of 24 albumin photographs dedicated to the production of sculptor Giovanni Maria Benzoni (1809-1873), among the most established Italian sculpture artists of the mid-nineteenth century. The collection takes on particular importance to be the work of the Photographic Plant Luswergh, among the pioneers of photography in Rome: Angelo Luswergh (1793-1858) and his son Giacomo (1819-1891), photographically active since the early 1950s, were protagonists of the birth of commercial photography in the capital and in 1855 published a catalogue of 131 views and reproductions of works of art, considered the first catalog of sale of photographs published in Rome. After Angelo's death, the photographic activity was entrusted to Tommaso Luswergh (1823-1907) and continued under the name Fratelli Luswergh, with study in Via dei Canestrari 8, a few steps from Piazza Navona. The photographs gathered here, all dedicated to Benzoni's sculptures, constitute a rare unitary set of the production of the Luswergh, probably conceived as a photographic repertoire of the sculpture, at a time when the new photographic medium began to assert itself as a tool for documentation and dissemination of the figurative arts. 24 albumin prints applied on cardboard (200 x 250mm c.a.) depicting sculptural works by Giovanni Maria Benzoni, all bearing the dry stamp of the photographic plant "Roma Luswergh, Via Canestrari 8" [Anni 1860 circa].
