GROSZ, George (1893-1959). Ecce Homo. Berlin: Der Malik-Verlag, [1923]. Copy in excellent state of preservation and in its original cardboard of the first edition, in the version "C" with color plates, of one of the most famous graphic collections of George Grosz, fierce portrait of the Berlin society of the Republic of Weimar. Through a succession of street scenes, interiors, figures of the bourgeoisie, military, prostitutes and veterans, Grosz builds a ruthless satire of Germany after the war, denouncing corruption, violence and social hypocrisy. Published by avant-garde Malik-Verlag, Ecce Homo immediately caused scandal: some of the images were judged obscene and led in 1924 to the condemnation of the artist and publisher Wieland Herzfelde and to the confiscation of part of the edition.
