The identification of the object held in the lion’s mouth has given rise to lively debate. Traditionally, numismatists have regarded it as a weapon — a sword or a harpa — and have assumed that the lion was bravely attacking the instrument with which one had attempted to bring him down. In 1981, the Sternberg cataloguer proposed a different interpretation: it would be the leg of an animal that the lion had hunted and killed. Whatever interpretation one adopts, this stater highlights the power and courage of the lion, a symbol of warrior strength.
